The Library Card:
Libraries are in a moment of flux; perhaps they always have been. The services offered by libraries have expanded well beyond storing and lending books. As our world becomes more complex, the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) 2018 Strategic Plan calls for a “complexity of purpose” in response. As these changes take place, patrons and librarians are adjusting their expectations and becoming comfortable with their new roles in a changing landscape.
While working with BPL we realized that in the midst of all the changes around and within the Library, one thing has remained largely unchanged – the library card. It was this finding that led us to begin a further investigation of library cards. We asked ourselves, “What might a library card look like for the libraries of the future?”
