Parsons DEED research lab:
The artisan sector is the second-largest employer in the developing world after agriculture, with sales of over $32 billion every year. Yet the majority of the world’s artisans live in poverty. In an attempt to better understand the source of this imbalance, the Parsons DEED Research Lab is authoring a series of case studies of a wide range of businesses and organizations working in the sector.
The case studies aim to represent a snapshot of the current global artisan sector and to better identify the various ways that already exist for working with artisans. We are interested in acknowledging both the successes and failures of different models; what is working and what is not, and more importantly what could work
in the future. We hope to create a resource that leads to the advancement of the sector as a whole by allowing both current and new stakeholders to learn from existing models.
